Cheat Sheet for Script Terminology

VO- (Voiceover) Narration heard over a scene. Can be made by an outsider looking in such as a narrator or a thought made by the character. Can be First person or Third Person.
Can also be referred to a narration heard at a higher volume than the music or above character noises.

Fade-in or Fade-out - fade-out consists of a two-or three-second transition from a picture to black and silence.
Fade-in is the opposite, could be going from a dark background into the scene.

Parenthesis- sometimes called round brackets, curved brackets, oval brackets, or just brackets.
Describes a quick action that the character is making

Cutaway- A cutaway is a related shot that is "away" from the basic scene. For example, during a hockey game you might "cut away" from the action in the stands to a shot of a fan eating popcorn.

Medium Shot- Most frequently used shot for filmmaking. Shows objects from the knees up.

Full Shot- Shows an entire setting. Alsp called and establishing shot because it established for the audience where the action is going on.

Close-up- Moves closest to the subject focussing on one specific detail. For example if the character had long scars across his face the camera might zoom up on the scars.

EXT- means exterior. For example the scene might be outside in a park.

INT- means interior. For example the scence might be inside in an office.

Dissolve- a fade out except the picture on the screen never darkens completely. for example ta sign on the wall might dissolve to a street sign.
