October sky Question
In the beginning of the chapter the principal told Sonny that life wasn’t fair, by the end of the chapter Sonny didn’t get into the calculus class because his grades were to low but he said it was the fair thing to do.
Do you think that at the end of the chapter Sonny learned a lesson in fairness? What other lesson did he learn?
Yes I think Sonny learned a lesson in fairness. The principal told Sonny that this school was a coal miner and football school and not for science clubs. Sonny said that that wasn’t fair and that he wanted a class that taught calculus. Miss Riley really pushed for the calculus class and it did, but only six people could be in it. Out of the seven people that signed up Sonny had the lowest grades and got cut. Sonny told his dad and his dad asked him if he wanted to talk to the teacher but Sonny said that it was alright and he had the lowest grades. His dad complimented that he was right and it was the fair thing to do. Sonny learned that life really isn’t fair and sometimes you have to make sacrifices. He fought for a class but he didn’t get to take it which shows a lot of his strong points.
The Principal also told Sonny that he learned a great lesson of life: life is quite ironic. The principal told him “You worked to get this class and now you will not be able to take it.” This was quite true and Sonny accepted it. He also did not fight the principal. I think that Sonny did learn many lessons in this chapter; he learnt that life isn’t always fair and that life is sometimes ironic.

A photo essay is a collection of pictures that have a small caption below the pictures that explains what happens in the picture above. The pictures are intended to tell a story or evoke a series of emotions. The pictures all have to relate to the theme of the essay.
A theme from October Sky is childhood dreams.

Right now with reading October Sky I am very overwhelmed. This week dance has started up and all of my free time is being used. Getting an hour a day of reading is really not possible every day of the week. When Mr. Keenan gave us the book I began reading right away I am almost have a good 200 pages read. I thought I would ahead of the class. I had a good start on it but when I read the calendar I discovered that the class is supposed to read to the end of chapter 11 by tomorrow I panicked. I think the best strategy for me reading my book would be to try to read it every night on the days I am not overly busy. Over the weekend when I don’t have dance classes in the evenings I will try to get as far ahead as I can. I love reading and I think that will really help me get myself motivated to finish this book.
The October Sky assignments are also very consuming. Today we got another blog assignment that has to be finished by the end of the week as well as Journal entries. The journal entries look pretty straight forward and will probably pretty easy to write them. It’s just I have to find the time to do them. This weekend I will try to finish as many Journal entries as I can to try to get ahead. If I put my mind I finishing them I think I could get 5 or 6 done. We also have to do a character sketch on the characters in the novel, October Sky. I chose to do the mom because I think she is an important character that helped shape the novel. My mom is important to me and if I were to write a novel on my life she would defiantly be in my book. We also have to write a mini essay on the characters. I have written my rough draft and I just have to type it out.
My strategies for the book are to do as much as I can at one time and I believe I am very motivated to finish the book and all of the assignments.

It has been a long 4 months of English but I have improved so much on so many different things. Mr. Keenan and Mr. Musto have taught us many things in such a short time frame. At the begging of the semester we watched the movie "JAWS" and talked about all the literary elements within it. I learned a lot about the different terminology within the movie. We also read the books "A Mid Summer Night's Dream” as well as "October Sky." These books had some new types of languages that I have never read about before. Shakespeare uses a completely different language than what we're used to today. I think I could still work on trying to decode some scenes in the book. We did a secret assignment before Christmas and we practiced are reading and writing skills. I had to do a lot of problem solving but I think I did very well in getting my message across. Throughout the semester we did many film studies with movies that had very strong messages, many of the movies I hadn't seen before. I think I improved this semester on exploring thoughts and ideas as well as collaborating with others. I collaborated well with others because I respected their opinions and support. I must continue to work on managing all my ideas and information. A way I could help manage my ideas would be to write in a journal or make a chart of what I am thinking when I read a book or do an assignment. I have a very strong opinion, I love to read, I enjoy writing, I listen to other people and I always get my work done on time. I believe that these traits that I posses will greatly improve my success in High School English. Considering how much I grew as a writer and a reader I would give myself an A for grade 10 English. I have become a better reader by reading a little bit each night before bed. I have created many oral, visual and media assignments throughout the year and I have done them with great effort and punctuality. English this year has been a great learning experience for me. I have learnt so much from Mr. Keenan and I trust that he has provided me with the skills that I will use for the rest of my high school experience and probably for the rest of my life.
